Pet Advice - New Kitten
A new kitten! Congratulations! It’s such an exciting time welcoming a new kitten into your family.
Although there are many things to consider once you have decided to welcome your new feline friend into your home, there is no need to feel overwhelmed. We at Family Vets are here to help you with any questions you may have.
On this page you will find advice on the most common queries that you as a new cat owner may have.
Often new kitten owners are anxious to get their new kitten checked over by a vet soon after arriving home. We are happy to welcome your new friend and will carry out a thorough clinical examination to make sure there are no health concerns.
This visit may also coincide with your kitten’s vaccinations so make sure to bring along a vaccination record card if you have received one from the breeder.
● 1st vaccination at 9 weeks old
● 2nd vaccination at 12 weeks old
● Annual booster vaccination 12 months later
We strongly advise pet microchipping. This increases the chances of being reunited with your pet if they are lost. It is a quick and cheap procedure which can be carried out at time of vaccination if you wish.
Keep your kitten and family free from worm infestations by treating regularly with appropriate worming products. There are many different wormers in shops but not all are effective against all worms. We advise you to contact us for advice on the correct wormers to use.
Kittens should be wormed
● Every 2 weeks up to 12 weeks old
● Every month up to 6 months old
● Every 3 months thereafter
Fleas and ear mites can be common in kittens. We advise monthly spot on applications to treat and prevent these infestations. Ticks can also be an issue once your new kitten ventures outdoors, especially in the summertime. Please contact us to get advice on appropriate treatment and preventatives for your kitten depending on their age and weight.
Our vets and nurses are happy to offer you advice on the best food to feed your new kitten. We recommend a good quality complete kitten food with plenty of fresh water. We have different cat food brands in our clinic and would be happy to discuss what would be best for your new kitten.
Neutering at a young age is the correct thing to do as it contributes to a longer and healthier life for your cat. The benefits of neutering can be found by clicking on the Neutering section
Although it may not be the first thing that comes to mind when welcoming a new kitten into your family, it is important to think about the benefits pet insurance can offer. We do not recommend one particular pet insurance company but pets do cost money and in some cases where complicated medical or surgical procedures are necessary, it is reassuring to know you have the safety net of pet insurance.
