We are a friendly, independently owned veterinary practice based in
Athlone, Co. Westmeath.

 

HISTORY

Family Vets Athlone formerly Athlone Vet Clinic, based in College Lane, Connaught St. Athlone has been serving the communities of Athlone and surrounding areas for over 50 years.

Having worked as vets in the clinic for a number of years, both Hugh Mulvihill and Denis Hellen took over the practice in 2020 and decided to rename the clinic Family Vets in 2023.

Our clinic is a valued and trusted part of the local community providing pet and farm animal services from Monday to Saturday as well as a 24 hour emergency service at night and weekends for patients who need urgent care.

● Veterinary practice and veterinary care is constantly changing and progressing. We at Family Vets Athlone endeavour to continue learning and to keep up to date with advances in veterinary care.

● We will always however treat your pet on an individual basis and continue to offer care options that suit your pet’s and your family’s needs.

● At Family Vets we go out of our way to accommodate pet owners and your pets. Our team of highly qualified vets, nurses and receptionists are always on hand to offer you the best possible advice for your pets care.

VETS

Denis Hellen MVB

Denis is a partner in the practice. He qualified from UCD in 2001 and worked in small animal and mixed practice in both the UK and Ireland before moving to Athlone in 2012. He enjoys all aspects of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery.

Hugh Mulvihill MVB

Hugh, a Longford native, is a partner in the practice. He qualified from UCD in 2002 and has worked in Athlone ever since. He has particular interest in farm animal practice

Linda Verdon DVM

Having graduated with her veterinary degree in 2014, Linda worked in mixed practice in Sligo and Longford before joining our team in 2020. Linda enjoys small and large animal medicine but has a keen interest in small animal surgery. Linda has a soft spot for Staffies and for two in particular called Bo & Gizmo!

Michael Brady MVB, MRCVS

Michael, a Fermanagh native, having spent 30 years in a Dublin small animal clinic joined our practice in 2021. He has a keen interest in all aspects of small animal practice especially small animal internal medicine.

Katie Murray DVM

Katie joined our team in May 2021 after graduating from Vet School at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences in Poland. Katie enjoys the variety that mixed practice medicine brings & can usually be found with her loyal canine companion, Sully, close by!

NURSES & RECEPTION

Mary Gordon

Mary has been a dedicated member of our team for nearly 30 years. Mary manages appointments and daily interactions with clients with great passion and enthuasism Mary comes from a farming background and has years of experience in both small & large animal practice.

Niasha Sweeney BSC VN. RVN

Niasha Sweeney BSC VN. RVN Our longest serving veterinary nurse, Niasha, has been with us since 2011 having graduated from Athlone Institute of Technology in 2010. Since beginning her career, Niasha has developed a love for medical nursing & takes a special interest in animal nutrition. Niasha has two beautiful dogs Harmony & Blondie, a cat Lacey & a tank full of fish!

Ciara Gaynor RVN

Ciara joined our clinic in 2020 after graduating from Athlone Institue of Technology. Ciara grew up with a keen interest in horses and continues to enjoy looking after all varieties of animals in her role as Registered Veterinary Nurse in our clinic. She has a particular interest in small animal radiography.

Ronan Walsh BSCVN.RVN

Ronan graduated as a Veterinary Nurse from Athlone Institute of Technology in 2008. He worked within the Veterinary and animal welfare industries over the years until he joined our team in 2022. He enjoys all aspects of veterinary nursing. Ronan has a very spoiled canine companion called Taylor!

Aine Healy RVN

Aine graduated from TUS in 2022 where she joined our practice shortly after. Aine has a keen interest in surgical nursing & anaesthesia. Aine is a very active GAA player and also loves to spend her free time socializing with friends & family.
