Pet Surgery

Here at Family Vets we perform pet surgeries on a daily basis.
We offer a wide range of routine surgical procedures from Monday to Friday as well as emergency surgeries when necessary.

Before your pets surgery
If your pet has been booked in with us for a routine surgery we would ask you to ensure that they do not eat after 8pm the evening before. There is no need to withhold water. We usually admit patients for surgery between 8.30am and 10am .

On admission one of our nurses will ask you to read and sign an anaesthetic consent form that explains the procedure and risks involved with sedation or general anaesthetic.

We will discuss the importance of a pre anaesthetic blood test if this has not already been discussed at a previous consultation. This is beneficial to pets of any age as you cannot rule out underlying disease in young animals but is especially recommended in pets older than 7 years old to detect any abnormalities that may complicate your pets surgery.
If you have any further concerns about your pets health we
would ask you to let us know at this stage when your pet is being
admitted. When admitted one of our vets will carry out a thorough clinical exam prior to administration of pre medications, sedatives or anaesthetics.

Your Pets Surgery

We use isoflurane gaseous anaesthesia which is extremely safe for our patients including our older, more at risk patients. We ensure adequate pain relief is given before, during and after your pets surgical procedure. While under general anaesthesia your pet is continuously monitored by one of our highly qualified and experienced veterinary nurses. We have a number of aids to help us monitor your pet throughout the surgery.

While your pet is recovering from their surgery, they are continually monitored and assessed by our nurses. We know that it can be a worrying time when your pet is undergoing an operation. We will contact you to let you know how surgery went and to organise a discharge time for your pet if they are going home that day. Depending on the type of procedure , your pet may need to be hospitalised with us overnight. We will discuss this with you if it is necessary.

After your pets surgery

When your pet is due to go home, one of our vets or nurses will discuss everything you need to know with you. This will include what to expect from your pet that evening and in the next few days. Some pets are sleepy that evening after anaesthetic, some pets will feel like eating and others may not. We will discuss your pets medications, bandage care, nutrition while recovering, what exercise your pet should be allowed , wound care, need for buster (lampshade) collar and when your pet’s next appointment is due.

We are always available for any advice or reassurance you may need throughout your pet’s recovery period.
